Autumn Colors in Aspen

Get your calendar out! It's time to start plan your leaf peeping adventure in the Rocky Mountains. After all, there are only so many weekends available to get out and enjoy the foliage before it's gone. Don't miss your golden opportunity to explore this autumn in Aspen.

With summer-like days and cool autumn nights, the abundant groves of aspen trees surrounding the City of Aspen put on one of the most colorful displays of golden fall color there is! And though ski season hasn't started just yet, there is still plenty to see and do in Aspen in the Fall. In fact, you can enjoy almost any activity you would enjoy during the summer during the fall season as well. Here's a peek at some of our top fall activities:

If you are driving to Aspen, consider taking the scenic route over Independence Pass, the highest paved State Highway in Colorado (Hwy 82). View golden aspen trees paired with the brilliant reds and oranges of the alpine tundra and amazing views of Mount Elbert, Colorado’s highest mountain on your drive.

Aspen’s dining scene is world-renowned, covering the full spectrum from haute cuisine to local dive bars and everything in between. With the Roaring Fork Valley and Colorado’s Western Slope nearby, there’s no shortage of craft foods and farm-to-table menus to enjoy around here.

It’s not enough to just look at golden aspen trees. You need to hear them. That’s right, the Quaking Aspen or "Quakies" for short, make a soothing sound when the wind shakes the dry autumn leaves. For the full effect, hike the Maroon Lake Scenic trail, take a few selfies with the Maroon Bells behind you, and then stand in the midst of a thick grove of aspen trees and simply listen. It’s as soothing as listening to your favorite noise machine.

Fall is the perfect time to relax and refresh and treat yourself to a soothing spa treatment or facial – and with any luck, you can find some amazing seasonal packages and off-season prices. Exfoliating scrubs with cinnamon and brown sugar, or perhaps an organic pumpkin masque might be just the thing to right the wrongs of summer’s fun in the sun. Check out the Rémede Spa, voted #1 Spa in the World by Travel + Leisure, with its steam rooms, cold plunges, hot tubs and stunning Confluence waterfall pool.

Make time to explore the historic mining town of Ashcroft. Surrounded on all sides by groves of aspens, this ghost town in the mountains is beautifully preserved. The historic buildings located here, combined with the stunning autumnal backdrop, are well worth photographing. Head up in the morning, once the sun has fully illuminated the area, for spectacular fall photos.
