Aspen's Main Holiday Event: 12 Days of Aspen
Nothing quite evokes the feeling of the holidays like the Colorado high country, and the beautiful mountain town of Aspen embodies the very best of the holiday spirit in Colorado. Snow covered mountains, trees trimmed with lights, families gathered together, and endless winter recreation abounds. Add to that Aspen’s many holiday themed activities available during the 12 Days of Aspen, and the City of Aspen comes to life with winter magic.
The last 12 days of December host a wide variety of activities the whole family can enjoy. The celebration kicks off at the Wheeler Stallard Museum on December 20, with Teddy Bear Story Hour at 10:30am, followed by the “Bayer & Bauhaus: How Design Shaped Aspen” exhibit opening and holiday cookie exchange from 4-6pm. Afterwards, head to the Wheeler Opera House for a family friendly benefit concert for Challenge America at 7:30pm.
On December 21, the Aspen Fire Department will be driving around town with Santa Claus spreading holiday cheer and A Christmas Carol comes to the Wheeler Opera House with a brand-new adaptation of Dickens’ ever-popular classic. Leading up to Christmas day, enjoy Family Workshops at the Aspen Art Museum, enjoy a holiday performance by the Aspen Skating Club, participate in ornament-making classes, take in a performance by comedian Melissa Villasenor and more!
The week following Christmas, attend the Aspen Film 27th Annual Academy Screenings, or drop off the kids at Aspen Chapel’s Parents’ Night Out to enjoy an evening out on the town with your loved one. Be sure to head over to the Wheeler Opera House on December 28th to see one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, Robert Randolph and The Family Band. Or view the heart-stopping artistry and athleticism of the Acrobats of Cirque-tacular at the Wheeler on the 29th.
Top off your 12th Day with an amazing series of events to ring in the New Year in Aspen. Many local restaurants offer dazzling special menus for New Year’s Eve, and several also offer early, easy Family-Friendly dinners. From 8pm-midnight bring the kids to Wagner Park for a free bonfire and good tunes. From here you will have a perfect vantage point for the fabulous Fireworks over Aspen Mountain at 8pm and midnight.
