Affordable Aspen, CO Vacations Made Easy at The Molly Gibson Lodge
Aspen, CO is known for its celebrities and wealth, but little known is its affordability for the rest of humanity. While the Molly Gibson Lodge is already one of the best affordable hotels in town – especially with the added value of complimentary breakfast, internet, a healthy après ski offering, pool, hot tubs and other four-star hotel amenities – what do you do when you walk out the door? Our incredible staff came up with a list of our favorite FREE things to do in Aspen this winter.
Take a Snowshoe HikeIf you’re looking for healthy physical activity without paying a hefty lift ticket price, grab your snowshoes and get out on over 60 miles of snowshoe and cross country ski trails that connect Aspen, Snowmass and the town of Basalt. One of our favorite experiences is to drive to the historic ghost town of Ashcroft and snowshoe up to the Pine Creek Cookhouse. While lunch isn’t free, the view and heart pumping snowshoe hike is – with the extra benefit of nature’s exhilarating views and solace.
Aspen Center for Environmental StudiesAspen is internationally known for its philanthropy, and thankfully one of our greatest benefactors, Elizabeth Paepke, created ACES at the West End of the town. This 25 acre preserve is known as Hallam Lake, one of four ACES campuses throughout the Aspen Valley. The preserve is open to the public year-round and provides an inspiring setting for ACES’ many educational and naturalist programs. A half-mile loop nature trail is available for all visitors. This trail meanders in and out of wetlands and includes stops at various observation decks.
ACES also offers its free evening program, the Naturalist Nights lecture series, which features experts sharing their knowledge of topics of the natural world through slide shows and discussion. Tea, donated by Two Leaves Tea Company, and Paradise Bakery cookies will warm up these winter evenings. Please visit their website for dates and times.
Town Walking Tour and People WatchingAspen is a great walking town – small enough to find your way, big enough to find a variety of things to see. Take some time to wander through incredible art galleries, boutiques, coffee shops, cobblestone streets, and more. Find a restaurant by perusing menus on the street, sit on one of many town benches and people watch or read a book, and enjoy the incredible up close view of Aspen Mountain.
Bud Light Hi-Fi Concert SeriesThe popular FREE Bud Light Hi-Fi Concert Series is back and debuts during Aspen Winternational and continues through March, with a series of five free, outdoor concerts held during key events and peak weekends throughout the season. All concerts are held in unique locations in Aspen and Snowmass and announced throughout the season. Visit their website for the full schedule and line up.
