Aspen & Snowmass Closing Weekend Festivities
What do you get when you mix fresh powder, parties and a freezing cold pond? You get spring at Aspen and Snowmass, and the reveling fete called Schneetag that marks the glorious closing day of the mountain. It has been a crazy spring, with a wild mix of weather, events and festivities. Closing day is the last chance to enjoy all of it on the mountain, and the weekend’s festivities promise to send off the 2012-13 ski season in style!
Ajax Mountain and Snowmass will celebrate their last day of the season this Sunday April 14, with still another week to enjoy the snow at Aspen Highlands, which closes April 21 (Buttermilk celebrated their last day April 7). Closing day at each one of the four Aspen mountains is a reason to celebrate, and this is traditionally one of the best parties of the year! Plan to bring out your favorite vintage ski outfit, superhero costume or multicolored wig to join in this cherished Aspen custom. The annual closing day tradition of Schneetag (German for “snow day”) will take place at Snowmass this year. This silly contest invites brave teams of 4 to perform an original skit, then hop aboard their home-made crazy watercrafts down the slope and into the icy cold pond at the base. You will see everything from sleds to lounge chairs as the vehicles for these silly antics, and the costumes never disappoint! Festivities will begin at 1pm on Spider Sabitch at Snowmass, and entry and spectating are free so all can enjoy this hilarious event! Incredible prizes such as GoPro Heros, Smith Goggles & Helly Hansen baselayers, concert tickets and restaurant gift certificates will be awarded to those talented teams who put on the best show and the biggest splash! Don’t forget to keep your costumes primed and ready and your skis tuned for one more closing day the following week, April 21 at Aspen Highlands.
Closing Day is just one part of this fun filled spring weekend. On Saturday April 13, check out the furry fun of the 18th Annual Sun Dog’s K-9 Uphill at Buttermilk Mountain from 10am-1pm. This snowshoe event and race for athletes and their canine best friends is a benefit for local animal shelters. It’s an all around good time with the added plus of another closing weekend costume shout-out for both people and dogs! Competitive and recreational divisions are available, and prizes will be awarded for sped and style! For more information or to register call 970-925-1069 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Top off each day of activities this weekend with one of 3 amazing closing weekend concerts at the Belly Up! On Friday April 12, Soul Asylum will grace the stage with their 90’s alt-rock sound and fave hits “Runaway Train” and “Black Gold”. Saturday April 13, a concert by Vintage Prom with the Spazmatics delivers every favorite 80’s cover you can think of in a feel-good fun show for all ages. Sunday April 14, after closing day festivities wrap up, don’t miss the unique, dance-enticing dubstep sound of British DJ phenom Rusko. For more information and tickets visit the Belly Up! website. See you on Closing Day!
