Our favorite time of year in the Town of Aspen is Opening Day! We are buzzing with excitement for the 2012-13 ski and snowboard season, beginning in less than two weeks. Opening Day is quite an event in Aspen, and we are lucky to get this rush 3 times with 3 opening days for 4 mountains! This year Aspen/Snowmass will open on November 22 at 9am - Thanksgiving Day. On December 8, Aspen Highlands will send up riders for the first runs of the season, and Buttermilk follows suit soon after on December 15.
Aspen’s events are a wonderful way to spend the holidays. Tear it up on Opening Day, then head in to celebrate the harvest with family and friends. Continue to enjoy good vibes and excitement of the mountain’s opening with the events of the Nature Valley Aspen Winternational FIS World Cup races. Cheer on the US Men’s and Women’s Ski Teams in their first World Cup races on US soil this season. And enjoy the multiple ancillary festivities, including the first-of-the-season Bud Light Hi-Fi concert in Aspen featuring Reverend Horton Heat, as well as the Taste of Winternational mini food festival with complimentary samplings from Aspen’s favorite eateries to nosh during the races.
Each mountain is sporting something new this year to give a different take on your Aspen mountain experience. In Snowmass, look for the opening of Elk Camp on Thanksgiving Day. This development for the 2012-2013 season unveils an exciting new restaurant for up to 300 guests, plus beautiful summer and evening event spaces. Aspen Ski Co spent an impressive $13 million to bring this new on-mountain dining concept to life, which will feature fresh rotisserie chickens, a custom-built pizza oven, creative salad bar and more. The structure is proud to be anticipating LEED-certification thanks to innovative, energy-efficient heating systems and building materials. Also on tap Snowmass: the addition of 230 coveted skiable acres on Burnt Mountain. Once a backcountry powder stash, these rolling, gladed meadows have no been incorporated into the Snowmass in-bounds acreage and will be managed and patrolled to make it accessible and safe for everyone.
At Aspen Mountain, new slopeside activities will serve to round out your ski experience. With your ski pass or lift ticket, take a jaunt up to the Sundeck to enjoy “Yoga for Skiers”, a complimentary class with some of the most incredible views in Aspen. In addition, look for a new mobile, Veuve Cliquot champagne bar called The Oasis, with varying, sun-drenched locations around the mountain to enjoy a decadent glass of bubbly and other luxurious treats. At Aspen Highlands, enjoy the big mountain terrain that “the Highlands” is famous for, including the over 200 acres that has been added in the last 2 years.
What’s big at Buttermilk this year? The news that the Winter X Games has signed on for two more years. This collaboration between Aspen Skiing Company and ESPN has called Buttermilk home for 11 years, and brings the most challenging, jaw-dropping displays of extreme sportsmanship and big air competition to the slopes Aspen with super pipe, slopestyle and snowmobile competitions that rock the boundaries of the snow sports industry.
One of the most exciting new additions to the Aspen experience this year is the Mountain Collective ski pass. New for the 2012-2013 season, this unprecedented pass is a partnership between 4 amazing resorts: Aspen/ Snowmass, Alta, Jackson Hole and Squaw. The incredibly priced $349 pass gives 2 days of riding at each mountain, plus 50% off on unlimited additional lift tickets. The price and quality of skiing cannot be beat. There is so much to look forward to in this 2012-2013 Aspen/ Snowmass ski season….see you Opening Day!
