30 Years of Food and Wine in Aspen, Colorado - Summer Events
This weekend, Aspen welcomes back the acclaimed Food & Wine Classic, a three-day epicurean event celebrating fine food, great wine and the splendor of the Rocky Mountains. This festival has become the kick-off event for summer in Aspen, and this year, the 30th anniversary of the Classic, promises to be the most memorable to date.
As in years past, the Food & Wine Classic will bring together big name celebrity chefs, rising culinary talents, and vinoculture’s finest producers along with food-savvy guests at the nation’s premier culinary event. The line-up this year includes an amazing roster, including Mario Batali, Emiril Lagasse, Bobby Flay, Jacques Pepin, Danny Meyer and Ming Tsai among many others, who will conduct more than 80 cooking demonstrations. Seminars and workshops such as “Butchery For Beginners” with John Besh, “Italian Sunday Supper” with Mario Batali, and “Salty and Sweet” with Top Chef’s Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons are also part of the Aspen event.
Don’t miss the Best New Chefs of 2012, to be featured in the Grand Tasting Pavilion all weekend. Wine seminars will cover a worldly range of topics such as “Italy’s Northern Whites”, “The Rhone Fab Four”, “Swill for the Grill”, and “Women in Wine- Napa’s Next Generation”. The schedule is packed full of fascinating seminars and tastings, and the schedule culminates with the Grand Tasting from 12:30-2pm on Sunday June 17.
It isn’t just food and fun at the Aspen Food & Wine Classic- this event has an important philanthropic component as well. The event helps to raise awareness and funding for Grow For Good, Food & Wine’s endeavor to support local growers and sustainable farming. 2% of the net proceeds from Classic ticket sales are donated to this meaningful initiative. In addition, the festival has offered “Green Passes”, a VIP experience with a lot of heart in which $1,000 of the price of each ticket is donated to the Grow For Good Campaign.
Think you are an old pro at the Food&Wine Classic? Think again…the event offers up several experiences that are new this year. A 5K Charity Run hosted by Bobby Flay will be held on June 15th, and will benefit the Grow For Good initiative. “Last Bite”, a late- night dessert party hosted by Top Chef: Just Desserts’ Gail Simmons, is sure to be a high point of the weekend, featuring a decadent offering of fabulous desserts including cakes, pastries, meringues, tarts and petit-fours. There will be several new seminar formats, including an audience-driven Q&A with Giada DeLaurentis, and interactive knife skills classes allowing everyone from beginner to chef to hone their primary kitchen skills.
This being the 30th anniversary of the Food and Wine Classic, it wouldn’t be a proper Aspen summer celebration without a grand fireworks display. You can look forward to kicking off the weekend on Thursday night June 14th with fireworks presented by the Aspen Chamber Resort Association. Another not-to-be-missed highlight this year is a benefit concert and party at the Benedict Music Tent on Saturday, June 16th at 6:30pm. Tickets include a knockout dinner from chefs Mario Batali, Jose Andres, and Michel Nischan. followed by a concert with the legendary Elvis Costello & The Blue Beguilers. Open to Classic passholders and the Aspen community, the event will help support the Chefs Make Change charitable initiative, benefitting each chef’s designated charities.
